Why operators in Los Angeles get certified

Forklift work in Los Angeles starts at the water. The Port of Los Angeles runs along the San Pedro and Wilmington waterfront, where 400 acres of Port property form the LA Waterfront, the working core of the region's container and goods-movement industry. Boxes come off those containers and go onto trucks, trailers and warehouse racks, and almost none of that happens without a lift truck.

Freight leaves the docks on the Alameda Corridor, a 60-mile rail cargo expressway built by the cities and ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach to connect the terminals with the transcontinental rail network. About 32 trains and roughly 16,800 TEUs, the standard container count, move through it every day. Inland, the BNSF Hobart yard in Commerce and the Union Pacific East Los Angeles yard are where containers come off the train and get broken down for local delivery.

There is more to the map than the port. LAX handles air cargo, which moves on a tighter clock and travels on pallets and dollies. Downtown, the Fashion District covers 107 blocks, from 7th Street to the 10 Freeway and Broadway to Essex Street, and it is the city's historic garment, fabric and wholesale-goods hub. Film and television production is its own moving job, with staging, lighting and set gear loaded in and out constantly. Those are three different rhythms of work: dockside, overnight air freight, and downtown wholesale.

The numbers are big because the work is. In the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim metro area, the Bureau of Labor Statistics counted 22,170 industrial truck and tractor operators in its May 2025 figures. Median pay for that group was $46,600 a year. That count covers the whole metro area, not just the city limits.

Employers ask for certification because OSHA holds them responsible for it. An operator needs formal instruction on how the truck works and why loads tip, then a hands-on evaluation at the workplace on the machine they will actually drive. Our course handles the first half online in about an hour for $59, with an OSHA-compliant certificate issued the same day. Doing that before you apply means a hiring manager in Wilmington or Commerce only has to schedule the drive test, not the training.

OSHA rules that apply in Los Angeles

California runs its own state OSHA plan in place of federal enforcement, with standards at least as strict as federal OSHA's. Cal/OSHA (California Division of Occupational Safety and Health) Los Angeles District Office enforces it in the Los Angeles area. Phone (213) 576-7451.

OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178(l) requires two things: formal instruction, which our online course provides, and a hands-on evaluation by your employer on the equipment you will actually use. Both steps apply everywhere in California, including Los Angeles. Source: OSHA.

Is online forklift certification legit? Three ways to get certified in Los Angeles

OSHA requires two things before anyone drives a forklift on the job: formal instruction, plus a hands-on evaluation from your employer on the actual truck you'll operate. Online certificates picked up a bad reputation because a lot of buyers skipped that second step and treated the certificate as the whole process.

Our course handles the first step properly: real OSHA-compliant instruction, not a rubber stamp. Your employer still has to watch you operate and sign off on a short written evaluation afterward, and that's exactly the step a classroom graduate has to complete too. Neither path skips it.

Online with us

About 45 minutes of theory from instructors who teach this all day, for $59. Then your employer's hands-on evaluation, and your certificate is ready the same day.

Local classroom

American Forklift Training Centers, Inc. runs a class it says takes as little as 45 minutes at its location in Commerce, southeast of downtown Los Angeles. Scheduled in advance, and you still do the same employer evaluation afterward.

Your employer does it all

Legal under OSHA. But your supervisor is not a trainer, and most workplaces have no written training program of their own, so many employers prefer you arrive with the theory already done.

American Forklift Training Centers, Inc. runs a class it says takes as little as 45 minutes at its location in Commerce, southeast of downtown Los Angeles; you can take it, but you would still need the employer evaluation afterwards.

The employer hands-on evaluation is free of charge to the operator. Employers certifying multiple operators should check our group pricing.

What if I fail the exam?
You can retake it as many times as you need at no extra charge. The exam requires an 80% score to pass. Most people pass on their first attempt. Not sure if you're ready? Try our free forklift practice test first.
