Why operators in Chicago get certified

Chicago's forklift jobs sit where freight changes from one mode to another. BNSF runs its Corwith intermodal facility on West 43rd Street, near Pershing Road, around the clock, moving loads from rail to truck. Union Pacific works its Global II intermodal terminal. On the southeast side, the Illinois International Port District owns close to 2,000 acres of industrial and recreational land along the Calumet River system.

O'Hare adds a second kind of freight. The airport's cargo campus covers about 2 million square feet of airside facilities plus another 2 million square feet landside, served by more than 25 cargo carriers. Air cargo moves on tight clocks, and everything that comes off a plane has to be broken down, staged and loaded again, which is forklift and pallet-jack work on every shift of the day.

The city's industrial history is still on the map. Pullman, on the far South Side, was built as a planned industrial community around the old Pullman railcar factory and is now a national historical park. Manufacturing, along with transportation, distribution and logistics, is what the city's own economic development group lists among its priority industries, and both of those run on people who can operate a lift truck safely.

BLS figures from May 2025 count 22,320 forklift operator jobs in the Chicago-Naperville-Elgin metro area, which spans Illinois and Indiana, at a median wage of $47,950 a year. That is the metro number, so it takes in Cicero, Berwyn, Oak Lawn, Skokie and the rest of the suburbs, not just Chicago. The work is spread along I-55, I-57, I-80, I-90 and I-94 rather than sitting in any one district.

Employers here will ask for your training record early, because OSHA makes the employer responsible for training and evaluating every operator on site. The formal instruction is the part you can finish on your own. This course is OSHA compliant, costs $59, takes about an hour online, and issues your certificate the same day. The hands-on evaluation then happens at work, on the truck you will drive, watched and signed by your employer. Showing up already certified, whether the job is at Corwith or in an O'Hare cargo building, makes you the easier hire.

OSHA rules that apply in Chicago

Illinois is under federal OSHA. Coverage of the Chicago area is split between two OSHA area offices: OSHA Chicago North Area Office, 2020 S. Arlington Heights Road, Suite 102, Arlington Heights, IL 60005, phone (847) 227-1700; and OSHA Chicago South Area Office, 8505 W. 183rd Street, Suite C, Tinley Park, IL 60487, phone (708) 342-2840.

OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178(l) requires two things: formal instruction, which our online course provides, and a hands-on evaluation by your employer on the equipment you will actually use. Both steps apply everywhere in Illinois, including Chicago. Source: OSHA.

Is online forklift certification legit? Three ways to get certified in Chicago

OSHA requires two things before anyone drives a forklift on the job: formal instruction, plus a hands-on evaluation from your employer on the actual truck you'll operate. Online certificates picked up a bad reputation because a lot of buyers skipped that second step and treated the certificate as the whole process.

Our course handles the first step properly: real OSHA-compliant instruction, not a rubber stamp. Your employer still has to watch you operate and sign off on a short written evaluation afterward, and that's exactly the step a classroom graduate has to complete too. Neither path skips it.

About 45 minutes of theory from instructors who teach this all day, for $59. Then your employer's hands-on evaluation, and your certificate is ready the same day.

Local classroom

Wolter Inc. runs a 7-hour class at its Bolingbrook location. Scheduled in advance, and you still do the same employer evaluation afterward.

Your employer does it all

Legal under OSHA. But your supervisor is not a trainer, and most workplaces have no written training program of their own, so many employers prefer you arrive with the theory already done.

Chicago Forklift Certification FAQ

Is online forklift certification legit in Chicago?
Yes. It's OSHA-compliant online instruction plus your employer's hands-on evaluation at your workplace. The certificate alone is not the whole process, and that is true of classroom courses too.
Do I need to attend a class somewhere in Chicago?
No. OSHA does not require classroom attendance. The formal instruction can be online; the hands-on evaluation happens at your workplace. Wolter Inc. runs a 7-hour class at its Bolingbrook location; you can take it, but you would still need the employer evaluation afterwards.
I live in Cicero, does this still work?
Yes. The certificate is valid in Cicero, Evanston, Oak Park, Berwyn, Skokie, and Oak Lawn, anywhere else in Illinois, and in every other state. The hands-on evaluation happens at your own workplace, wherever that is.
How much does forklift certification cost in Chicago?
Our online forklift certification costs $59 per operator. This includes the full training course, certification exam with unlimited retakes, and an instant downloadable certificate. The employer hands-on evaluation is free of charge to the operator. Employers certifying multiple operators should check our group pricing.
How long does it take?
About 45 minutes for most people. The course is self-paced, so you can go faster or slower. The employer hands-on evaluation typically adds 30 to 60 minutes, scheduled at your workplace.
How much do forklift operators make in Chicago?
The median forklift operator pay in the Chicago-Naperville-Elgin, IL-IN metro is $47,950 a year, according to BLS May 2025 data for industrial truck and tractor operators. Half of operators earn more than that. Pay varies by industry and shift.
Do I need to renew my forklift certification?
OSHA requires your employer to evaluate you at least every 3 years, plus refresher training after an accident, near miss, or a switch to a new type of truck. If you've been certified before, our $49 recertification covers the refresher training.
What if I fail the exam?
You can retake it as many times as you need at no extra charge. The exam requires an 80% score to pass. Most people pass on their first attempt. Not sure if you're ready? Try our free forklift practice test first.
